Joining Together to Fight SMA

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a devastating neuromuscular disease. In its most severe form it is the "Number One Genetic Killer of Children Under Two". At present there is no cure or treatment.

SMA Angels Charity is a 100% volunteer, non-profit charity dedicated in the fight against SMA. The charity began in 1997 when twins Cassidy and Skylar Swanson were diagnosed with the severest form of SMA. The main goals of the charity are to raise money for research and to improve quality of care for those with SMA.

SMN deficiency disrupts gastrointestinal and enteric nervous system function in mice
Published May 6, 2015 SMA Angels Charity funds $50,000 for Remarkable Research
GI issues and diet can be significant factors in the quality of life of SMA patients, but these symptoms have not been well studied. Dr. Kevin Foust and his team at Ohio State University are doing the first in depth study of GI function and SMA. His studies show that when the gene affected in SMA is deleted in mice, the cells of the gut nervous system malfunction. All of the symptoms observed in these mice models have also been noted in SMA patients. The GI symptoms can include reflux, delayed emptying of stomach contents and constipation. These studies are highly suggestive that GI symptoms may be a primary aspect of disease in patients and can impact their quality of life and represent significant concerns for the patients and caregivers. Our charity focuses on research to improve quality of care and quality of life for those with SMA. We are proud to partner with Dr. Foust in this effort. more details
